ELIDEL

ELIDEL contains pimecrolimus 1%, a topical calcineurin inhibitor specifically designed for treating atopic dermatitis (eczema) without the side effects of corticosteroids.

Ingredients

Active ingredient: Pimecrolimus 1%. Pimecrolimus selectively inhibits calcineurin, preventing activation of T-cells and release of inflammatory cytokines (IL-2, IFN-gamma). Unlike steroids, it does not cause skin atrophy, making it ideal for sensitive areas like face and eyelids.

How to Use

Apply thin layer to affected areas twice daily. Can be used on all body areas including face, neck, and skin folds. Rub in gently and completely. Use at first sign of eczema flare to prevent progression. Safe for long-term intermittent use. No need to taper or limit duration. May be used in children as young as 3 months.

Indications

Mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (eczema), especially for facial and intertriginous areas. Second-line treatment when topical corticosteroids are ineffective or inappropriate. Maintenance therapy to prevent flares. Particularly useful for delicate skin areas prone to steroid-induced atrophy.

Cautions

FDA black box warning regarding potential cancer risk (though not conclusively proven). Avoid excessive sun exposure and UV therapy. May cause transient burning/warmth at application site (usually improves with continued use). Not recommended for immunocompromised patients. Avoid contact with eyes. Do not cover with occlusive dressing unless directed by physician. Pregnancy Category C.
